Church Lane is finally coming to life with the chance to finally paint a backscene. I'd enjoyed the small one I'd painted for Holmeswell last year so relished the chance to try a bigger canvas.
The first attempt.
At the time I liked it, but very quickly came to hate it.
It's a bit too cluttered. The trees all seem a little too uniform. There's a few too many dwellings for the small village/hamlet look. Worst of all though I didn't get the colour mix for the stone colours quite right, so when the cream coloured railway buildings were placed for a trial fit they unintentionally blended in.
Preparation to fix it wasn't anywhere near as challenging as first thought. I'd mentioned before how I wasn't sure at the time if giving the backscene board a white undercoat was worth it, but after sanding down the above attempt it meant I only needed one coat of sky blue to bring it back up to a blank canvas.
The second attempt - Much better!
Stripped back the trees to the absolute bare minimum (Baring in mind there will be physical trees on the layout), the open field works better than expected, and I swapped out the reference I was using for a church to a 1920s postcard of something a bit more local to me. Proportionally, and angularly, it works a lot better.
Finally, I can now get on to adding the physical scenery!
